A re-elected majority Liberal Government will take tough new steps to crack down on serious drug trafficking, especially ice.
Every Tasmanian deserves to live in safety and free from the impact of crime and we make no apology for taking decisive action in response to the problems posed by all illegal drugs in our society.
Tasmania Police drug detection dogs are highly regarded and a very effective weapon in the fight against illegal drugs.
In just over a decade since they were introduced to the force, individual dogs have detected more than $10 million worth of drugs in their career lifetime.
A re-elected majority Liberal Government will increase the number of drug detection dogs across the state to seven, with the deployment of an additional three drug sniffing dogs.
Having successfully restored police numbers after Labor’s savage cuts – and committed to increase numbers by a further 125 over the next term of Government – a Liberal majority Government will support the establishment of Specialist Ice Investigators assigned across the State.
The Specialist Ice Investigators will target criminals involved in the manufacture, distribution and trafficking of crystal methamphetamine.
Two Specialist Ice investigators will be attached to Drug Squads in each region to provide specific focus on ‘ice’ related drug activity that has a devastating impact on our communities.
Tasmania’s Specialist Ice Investigators will be highly skilled Police Officers, who are provided with additional high-level training that focuses on targeting, disrupting and preventing the trafficking of ice.
Adding this resource to each region across the State will allow frontline police offers to focus on other areas of crime.
