The lack of a drivers licence is a significant barrier towards young people gaining employment, and the Hodgman Liberal Government recognises the importance of helping disadvantaged learner drivers gain essential on-road driving experience to help them get their driver’s licence.
To that end, I am pleased to announce the successful recipients in the next round of funding for the Learner Driver Mentor Programs, with $700 000 committed for 15 existing providers and for one new program for 2017-18.
Learner Driver Mentor Programs pair volunteer mentors with disadvantaged learner drivers to help them gain their licence, giving them greater social mobility, educational opportunities and access to employment.
More than 230 hours per month of on-road driver supervision and instruction is being achieved across the state with 88 L2 licences and 171 provisional licences attained last year, and demand for the Program continues to grow.
Individual Learner Driver Mentor Programs are supported by a range of government, non-government, business and community organisations as well as local volunteers, and we are pleased to support these programs that are making a real difference in the lives of many disadvantaged Tasmanians.
Eligible learners can find out more at Driver Mentoring Tasmania or by contacting their nearest Learner Driver Mentor Program provider:
