I am pleased to announce the National Gun Amnesty is proving to be very successful in Tasmania, with 154 firearms handed into Tasmanian police stations just one week after it started.
That’s 154 illegal or unwanted firearms that cannot end up in the hands of criminals and can now be safely disposed of.
The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to keeping Tasmanians safe from gun-related crime, which is why we have a permanent amnesty in place that allow people to surrender their unwanted or illegal firearms at any time.
The National Gun Amnesty is a timely reminder to the community to not risk illegal or unwanted firearms falling into the wrong hands. Now is the time to put your mind at ease and register or hand in your unregistered or unwanted firearm.
As well as being able to hand in your firearms to police stations and dealers, mobile amnesties will be conducted all around Tasmania in the coming weeks.
I thank everyone in the community that has taken action and surrendered their illegal or unwanted firearms, and encourage anyone who’s been putting it off to act now and not let their unwanted firearms end up the wrong hands.
